Creating and Uploading Your Site Content

There are two main ways to create and upload your site content: creating the code for the site content and uploading it via FTP, or creating it and uploading it using Web publishing software. This section explains these two methods.

FTP

Important: S & J Technologies shared plans have unique FTP instructions.

FTP is a manner of accessing your Web site so you can upload site content. Most FTP programs have graphical interfaces that make it easy to transfer and manipulate files. Each FTP client will look a little different, but most will display the files on your hard drive on one side, and the files on your Web server on the other. With these graphical FTP interfaces, you can usually click on the file you want to upload to your Web server, and drag it from your hard drive to the server.

If you don’t have an FTP client program, you can download one from the Internet. For more information on FTP, or to obtain an FTP client, try these resources:

Some of the above FTP client software providers offer free or evaluation versions of their software.

If you are using your browser to FTP, you must FTP using ftp.example.com for the domain name.

If you wish to FTP (using a browser) before your domain name has propagated throughout the Internet, use ftp.wx.registeredsite.com (Windows) or sf1000.registeredsite.com (Linux) in place of a numeric IP address.

Anonymous FTP

Anonymous FTP is a method that allows visitors to download files from your Web site via FTP without having to log on or identify themselves. In an effort to combat server attacks and keep your site content safe, S & J Technologies has disabled Anonymous FTP. This translates into less downtime due to server attacks, and it creates a more controlled environment that can be managed more efficiently.

In order to ensure better server stability and integrity, S & J Technologies does not allow use of Anonymous FTP in our shared hosting environment.

S & J Technologies offers Windows users other ways to allow unauthenticated users to upload files to your Web site. One example is SAFileUp, an ASP DLL that allows for browser-based FTP functions. The SAFileUp DLL, when used in conjunction with a simple script, will allow you to upload files to your site by browsing your local directories.

Both Linux and Windows customers can also upload files using PHP and FrontPage components
